Background

Our 864 range features exceptional wines from specific and single blocks, produced in small quantities and released in only the best years. An Oakridge 864 wine is terroir-driven. Made to demonstrate the importance of time and place with every bottle, and always a tribute to tradition, these wines are ready to drink now or cellar.

Tasting Notes

Vibrant purple in appearance with a ruby hue. Opulently fruited on the nose, with aroma of dragonfruit, blueberry and plum leading to notes of cassis. Elements of black olive, green pepper, bunch spice and toast add complexity. The palate is expansive, textural and concentrated with a generous core of blue and purple berried fruits, long chains of plush velvety tannins are intricately woven within the fruit providing length and supportive structure. A subtle line of acid keeps the wine on point, never wavering. Pure, succulent and refined from start to finish.

Vineyard Notes

Oakridge Vineyard, Close Planted Block. East-facing at 120 metres above sea level. Planted at 5,200 plants per hectare in the grey alluvial loams of Coldstream using the R6VW28 clone and cropped at 6.7 t/Ha.

Winemaker's Notes

All grapes hand harvested and sorted prior to destemming 70% of the berries directly to fermenter on top of 30% whole bunches for fermentation. After a three day cold maceration, fermentation spontaneously commenced peaking at 30°C. The fermenter was regularly pumped over and plunged during a three week fermentation. The wine was then pressed to French oak barrels for a 14 month maturation before blending and bottling.

Vintage Notes

A long, cool growing season with average cropping levels and ample rainfall has resulted in wines with outstanding varietal definition and purity. Flowering occurred in November, fruit set in late December and harvested on March 18th at 12.9 baume.

Halliday Wine Companion - 96pts

“Well, syrah has certainly earned its place at the top tier this vintage. Fruit off the close-planted site (5200 vines/ha) at Oakridge, mostly destemmed, with 20% whole bunches in the ferment. Matured 10 months in 10% new French puncheons, harnessing the elements into a complete wine. It’s wonderfully savoury, spicy and smoky, with plentiful grainy, textural tannins. It’s full bodied, but there’s no excess here.” – Jane Faulkner

James Suckling - 96pts

“A peppery and spicy style with impressive definition and concentration. Complex, too. There are dark cherries and plums, spice and dark stony minerals on offer. There’s a handy sense of concentration and it’s very layered and long. Spicy finish. Drink or hold” – Nick Stock

Wine Reviewer - 96pts

“The nose starts a touch reductive but blows off with pepper, blackberry and plum fruit alongside deli meats. Medium bodied with a savoury and mineral core; think green peppercorn, earthen tannins and wild game. Plum fruit has concentration and soaked up the impact of oak with leather and damp earth in a Rhone like nod to finish. A stellar example of Yarra Valley Shiraz. ” – Patrick Eckel
