Tasting Notes
Vibrant red, strawberry hue. A fresh lift of red berries and floral aromas greet from the outset. There is a depth to the plumby and boysenberry notes, with complimentary mountain herbs and bramble adding layers of intrigue. Subtle carbonic notes hint at judicious whole-bunch use, adding another layer to the complex bouquet. On the palate, succulent, squishy red berries appear from entry. Just-ripe raspberries and plumbs glide along a latticework of silky pinot tannins. There is an elasticity to the texture, which gives the wine presence and life that continues on the palate to astonishing depth.
Vineyard Notes
Hazeldene Vineyard, Block 1. North facing at 180 metres above sea level. Planted in the red volcanic soils of Gladysdale in 1998 using the MV6 clone and cropped at 5.0 t/Ha.
Winemaker's Notes
Hand-picked and sorted prior to destemming 75% of the berries into an open fermenter on top of 25% whole bunches. Fermentation proceeded naturally and lasted two weeks prior to pressing to French oak barrels. of which 10% were new. Malolactic conversion was completed in barrel where the wine remained on its gross lees for 10 months followed by a further six months on lees in tank before bottling.
Vintage Notes
A cool, wet spring and summer followed by a dry and temperate autumn has delivered balanced crops in near perfect harvesting conditions. Flowering occurred in late October, fruit set in December and harvest on March 5th at 13.1° baume.
