Background

Our 864 range features exceptional wines from specific and single blocks, produced in small quantities and released in only the best years. An Oakridge 864 wine is terroir-driven. Made to demonstrate the importance of time and place with every bottle, and always a tribute to tradition, these wines are ready to drink now or cellar.

Tasting Notes

Purple-red, bright and fresh looking. Aromatic and intense. Red and black fruits - raspberry, blackcurrant, pomegranate, blood plum and brambles. But with intricate detailing. There's hints of reduction and flint, cooked rhubarb, sage, licorice, pie crust and all manner of brown spices - cinnamon, sumac and nutmeg. The flavours all carry over on to the palate, framed by satiny, silky pinot-like tannins that fully coat the mouth, adding to the sense of intensity and dimension. The finish lasts for minutes, binding the fruit flavours and spiciness in a savoury yet refreshing package.

Vineyard Notes

Oakridge Vineyard, Close Planted Block. East-facing at 120 metres above sea level. Planted at 5,200 plants per hectare in the grey alluvial loams of Coldstream using the R6VW28 clone and cropped at 6.3 t/Ha.

Winemaker's Notes

Hand harvested and sorted prior to destemming 70% of the berries into an open fermenter on top of 30% whole bunches. After a three-day cold maceration, fermentation spontaneously commenced peaking at 30°C. The fermenter was regularly pumped over and plunged during a three-week fermentation before the wine was pressed to French oak puncheons for a 14 month maceration on its gross lees.

Vintage Notes

A long, late and cool growing season with very low crops delivering wines with exceptional flavour, freshness and balance. Flowering occurred in November, fruit set in late December, and harvest on March 27th at 13.3° Baumé.
