Background

Our 864 range features exceptional wines from specific and single blocks, produced in small quantities and released in only the best years. An Oakridge 864 wine is terroir-driven. Made to demonstrate the importance of time and place with every bottle, and always a tribute to tradition, these wines are ready to drink now or cellar.

Tasting Notes

Deep purple with a ruby hue. An intensely fragrant nose of dark cherry, plum, blackcurrant with violet florals are complemented by notes of anise spice, cedar and oak toast. The palate is refined and medium bodied, fresh and bright, with concentrated a core of dark fruit and silky yet supportive tannins. Flavours of cassis and black plum are complemented with an element of spice complexity and fine line of acidity driving the finish.

Vineyard Notes

Oakridge Vineyard, Winery Block. North-facing at 120 meters above sea level. Planted in the grey alluvial loams of Coldstream in 1996 to a mixed clonal selection and cropped at 4.5 t/Ha.

Winemaker's Notes

All grapes hand harvested and sorted prior to gently destemming to fermenter. After a four day cold maceration, fermentation commenced and peaked at 30°C. Pump-overs were conducted twice per day, and post ferment, the wine remained on skins for an additional 4 weeks prior to pressing. The wine then spent 15 months in French oak barrels maturing before blending and bottling.

Vintage Notes

A warm, wet spring followed by a dry summer and autumn period has delivered good crops in near perfect harvesting conditions. Flowering occurred in November, fruit set in January and harvest on March 19th at 12.7° baume.

Halliday Wine Companion - 97pts

“Made virtually identically to the Original Vineyard Cabernet, this is a totally different, yet equally impressive, beast. A brilliant and bright medium crimson purple. Still a baby, this has a core of concentrated, perfectly pitched cassis fruit, together with some cedar and cigar box and a whiff of gravel and lavender. A touch closed at present, this has terrific purity and depth of fruit on the palate, with everything in place for this to improve for at least the next decade or two, if not longer!” – Philip Rich

The Wine Front - 96pts

“Oakridge is on a roll with cabernet. I love how powerful this is, and yet how refreshing. It’s what the Yarra Valley does so well, when it’s on song with cabernet, and Oakridge has put on a masterclass here. Boysenberry and blackcurrant, mint and florals, cedar and bay, with refreshing-but-flavoursome acidity throughout and a grand churn of tannin through the back half. Maybe there are some chocolate characters here too, and strawberry pie-like notes; whatever it is, it works. A brilliant future lies ahead.” –  Campbell Mattinson
